Animal enrichment sessions support individuals with a range of conditions, in developing social skills and confidence in public settings with the aid of an assistance dog.

Whilst assistance dogs are highly trained, they also rely on clear communication from their handler. During animal enrichment sessions, individuals are supported by staff to visit places or take part in activities that they previously have not felt comfortable attending without support. Support sessions result in clients learning valuable life skills and developing the confidence to approach new tasks independently.

Each session is tailored to the client’s individual needs and are suited to those with Autism, mental health conditions or other special educational needs.

  • Some examples of potential sessions are:
    – Navigating shops to find items
    – Ordering food and eating in restaurants and café’s
    – Visiting public attractions
    – Attending gatherings such as parties
    – Attending group dog training sessions and doggy play dates

Many handlers have benefited from group sessions and the gradual introduction to other POTP members and their dogs. Sessions assist handlers in developing friendships through their common interests, and encouraging their ability to feel more confident interacting with new people out in public.
