The Trainer

Hi. I’m Nicky and Owner and Trainer of Part of the Pack.

Throughout my career I have had the absolute privilege to work with and train a large range of species in Zoological and aquarium settings. Spending time with each individual animal has taught me something new and unique and helped me form the understanding of training and communication I teach with today.

I enjoy working with a range of clients of all ages and backgrounds, have a strong understanding of Autism and a range of other special education and mental health needs. This understanding allows me to personalise and adjust teaching to different comprehension levels within the family.

Parents can also be assured that staff are DBS checked.

The Training

Part of the Pack uses training methods that promote high standards of animal welfare and are do not utilize pain or fear. Instead, both handlers and dogs learn to communicate clearly and form an equal partnership fulfilling each others needs.
Through the use of a personalised ‘Training language’, clients will create a bond with their dog closer than ever before and both will reap the benefits.

At Part of the Pack we use a ‘train the trainer’ ethos. This means that whilst assisting handlers with dog training, the goal is to educate handlers in training methods and principles. Not only does this provide consistency for the dog, but it also results in competent and experienced handlers.

Part of the Pack does not allow the use of E collars, Shock collars, Prong or slip leads. Training strategies are designed to set a dog up to succeed and then positively reinforce the desired behaviors rather then punishment based.

Gentle Leader collars may be used provided there is no ‘Tugging’, ‘Checking’ or ‘Lead Pops’ (Pulling on the lead to deliver corrections). The dog must always control the pressure. Leaders must only be used if positively conditioned and can be worn by the dog voluntarily without distress. Material Martingale collars without a chain may be used in specific circumstances as a reasonable adjustment, however it must fitted properly so pressure is restricted. There must be no ‘Tugging’, ‘Checking’ or ‘Lead Pops’ (Pulling on the lead to deliver corrections). Instead the dog must always control the pressure.

Dog welfare and quality of life is of top priority to me. In all circumstances the least invasive training options will always be used, giving time for training to progress rather than utilizing tools for faster results.
